Disaster Health and Sheltering Course:

Who?  The course will prepare nursing students for various roles they could have in a Red Cross Shelter working with a Red Cross Disaster Health Services nurse.  Public health nurses are welcome, too!

What?  Part 1 of Disaster Health and Sheltering is completed prior, before April 28th and includes a video, a powerpoint style training and a short quiz.  Part 2 on April 29 is an interactive, live web-based table top exercise.  Working together in small teams, the participants meet the clients in a shelter, analyze case studies, and practice applying public health practice in shelter operations.

Why?  Course completion comes with a certificate and nursing CE for the event is underway. For nursing students, this course helps prepare you to assist in local disaster shelters, is a great introduction to one nursing role within the American Red Cross, and can be added to your resume.  As a public health nurse you will find out more about how Red Cross shelters work and how to interface with Red Cross disaster operations in your community.

The Lead Instructor:  Janice Springer, DNP, RN, PHN

Dr. Springer is the Divisional Disaster Health Services Advisor for the American Red Cross for the North Central Division.    She supported Hurricane Sandy relief in the role of liaison between Red Cross, FEMA personnel from the Office of Disability Integration and Coordination, local community partners and the shelters in the NYC and Long Island area.  She is a co-author of this curriculum, released nationally in 2012 to colleges and schools of nursing.  Her research on disaster shelters and at-risk populations has been presented at national and international conferences.

Dr. Springer will be supported in the training by Red Cross nurses who have responded to disaster across the nation and within Arkansas.
